Shuktara Handmade paper was one of the first handmade paper enterprises in Bangladesh. The women artisans specialize in making paper using scrap from local mills. Such recycling is very common in Bangladesh.

Purchased through Prokritee, a fair trade organization ,( meaning “nature” in Bangladesh), that provides managerial, product design , development and marketing assistance to 8 producer groups/ enterprises in Bangladesh. Prokritee and its 8 enterprises provides jobs for poor rural women. The women who work for the enterprises are widows, divorcĂ©es or head of households with little or no income. By providing jobs for women, , Prokritee is able to improve the women's standard of living and help them send their children to school.
Thanks to our friends at Siham Craft Link for supplying us with so many fantastic fair trade items ( and this blog).
